What's the difference between hydrating and moisturising?

The terms hydrating and moisturising are touted in the advertising world a lot and it can be overwhelming and an expensive exercise on what to choose.

So, what is the difference between them?  Would you believe both their actions are different and understanding those differences, may be key to consider on where to focus a skincare regimen on which products are best suited for your skin.

Let’s break it down in easy terms

Dry and rough? Chances are it’s in need of a moisturiser. Moisturisers act as a barrier on the surface of the skin to protect the moisture that already exists from evaporating. The moisturiser generally contains a form of oil-based ingredients that assist in locking in moisture and stops water evaporating.  However, if the skin is lacking hydration within the deeper layers of skin (dehydration), then unfortunately moisturisers can be less effective.

Dull, lacklustre, tight feeling? Chances are it’s in need of hydration.  Hydration is infusing your skin with water, example ingredients that help are hyaluronic acid or glycerine that assist replenishing moisture levels deeper in the skin. These types of ingredients are called humectants that attract and hold moisture by drawing water from the atmosphere and binding it within the layers of skin. They generally come in the form of a serum, toner or mist. Nevertheless, they can evaporate and require a moisturiser to lock in that hydration goodness.

Once you figured out what suits your needs, it should be easy;

  • dehydrated = hydrate
  • dry = moisturise

Still unsure?

The difference between dryness and dehydration can be challenging and keep in mind if you have severe dryness, it may be worth seeing a skin specialist or your GP as there may be an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

Generally, for many of us, using products to hydrate your skin first increases the power of any moisturiser used on the surface.

When it comes to hydrating and moisturising, both are the secret weapon in the pursuit for great skin!
